NFU – STEMteprise Workshops
What is STEMteprise?
Farming STEMterprise is a range of free, engaging cross-curricular STEM and enterprise projects for Key Stage 2.
Being former primary school teachers, the NFU Education team understand the challenges faced by the profession so Farming STEMterprise has been designed with three main goals in mind;
1) To save teachers time and reduce workload
2) To spark learners’ passion and enthusiasm for STEM subjects
3) To convey important messages about food and nutrition through a cross-curricular, project-based approach.
Farming STEMterprise engages reluctant learners through real-life, meaningful problems as part of engaging cross-curricular projects. The projects take children through each stage of setting up a farm shop business: considering seasonality when deciding which crop to grow, growing their own ingredients, considering nutrition when designing their recipes, using market research to test their ideas out with potential consumers, working within a budget when buying additional ingredients, learning knife skills when making their products, calculating expected profit, designing responsible packaging etc.
Practical Science and Design & Technology lessons, closely tailored to each year group’s programme of study, are incorporated throughout the projects and opportunities for applying Maths skills to engaging, real life problems are embedded at each stage. Farming STEMterprise enables teachers to deliver the core content from the national curriculum whilst developing learners’ soft skills such as public speaking and team work, as well as vital life skills such as healthy eating, knife proficiency and financial literacy.
The projects (which include ten lesson plans, ten power points and all associated resources for each key stage 2 year group) are free to download from the NFU Education website: www.nfueducation.com/stemterprise
Farming STEMterprise has received Green Tick accreditation from the Association for Science Education and has recently been named as a British Educational Training and Technology (Bett) Awards finalist.
What is hi-impact’s role?
Working in conjunction with NFU, we at hi-impact use our educational specialities and teaching talents to assist in delivering their brilliant STEMteprise workshop throughout the UK. So far, hi-impact have carried out one staff and three student CPD STEMteprise workshops, with the latest being delivered on the 25th November at St. Werburghs Catholic Primary School by our very talented consultant, Gemma Sapp. The children were tasked with making and churning their own butter, kneading their own dough, and selecting their own toppings to bake delicious, personalised tarts.
We at hi-impact are immensely proud to be part of such a brilliant, innovative, and educational workshop like STEMteprise and we’re excited to continue delivering our services.
